The New York Wheel is on track to become one of the city’s great landmark attractions. Located in Richmond Terrace, Staten Island, on the New York Harbor, the 675 ft. wheel will be the tallest observation wheel in the world, surpassing other great landmarks such as the London Eye and Singapore Flyer.
PARKPLUS was brought into the project early to help solve a unique problem. The site for The Wheel included an 880-capacity surface parking lot used by daily and monthly commuters who took the ferry to Manhattan. The City of New York mandated that 880 parking spaces be maintained during preparation of the site to accept The Wheel. For this purpose, 408 DP003 hydraulic stacker car lifts were brought in on a temporary basis to solve the parking challenges during construction.
13 months later these 408 stackers were removed for construction of a permanent garage. Due to New York City-mandated garage height restrictions, 134 DP003 stackers were permanently installed in the garage in order to reach parking capacity and enable maximum development of available land.
The New York Eye will launch in mid 2018 and is set to contribute to the renaissance of Staten Island’s tourism economy.
